Systems Thinking: analyzing the components of a system and understanding their relationship to one another
Biomes are related to sustainability because a biome is needed to sustain life (all people, animals and plants). It is important for students to understand how everything is interconnected. This knowledge will help them understand global issues. It will also help them understand how their actions cause a ripple effect. This will use Systems Thinking because a biome is a complex system that is made up of a wide variety of components that all depend on each other.
Biomes are taught in science, however it can also relate to all of the content areas. As we look on the maps we will discuss some social studies. When the students are comparing and contrasting temperatures they will need to use their math skills. They will be reading about biomes and they will complete a graphic organizers and write about what they have learned which uses their language skills.
